For those of you who don’t know, Brian Speier is a successful Portland UX and UI designer who is the owner and founder of his own Portland UX business. As someone who became independently wealthy, he gave us some insight into what it was like to buy his first home.
Where did you buy your first home and what year was it?
I bought my first house in 2015, in Los Angeles, California. I had been renting a nice condo for a while before that but I decided it was time to have a place of my own. Where I could start a family.
Where were you living before you bought your first house? Did you live with roommates? Did you live alone?
I rented a condo for about 3 years before buying my house. I lived alone, and would occasionally use my extra room for guests or family. Mostly it was a bachelor’s pad.
What pushed you towards buying a house?
I had reached a point in my career where I realized I had reached success. I was happy with my job and my life, and I had a proper savings. It just seemed like the logical next step for my life.
How did you gather up all the money in order to buy the house?
I had been saving since I had gotten out of college. My parents always taught me to save, so I always put away a percentage, at least ten percent, of everything I made. Eventually I had saved enough to put a down-payment on a decent house.
What was your motivation for buying the house? Was it for profit or were you thinking about starting a family?
I was thinking of this home as a place that I could start a family. Maybe not to stay there forever, but I definitely put thought into having room for kids as well as guests when I picked out the floor-plan. Four bedrooms seemed like the perfect fit.
What are your top 3 favorite things about the house?
I liked the backyard, the kitchen, and the master bathroom the most. Basically the sheer size of the yard made me love it from the start. AS for the kitchen, it is big and has every appliance i could need. The master bathroom is a soft spot for me, since I have always wanted a big shower tub combo with jets. Nothing like taking a nice soak after a long day, that is for sure.
Did you have anything that you didn’t like?
The fence around the property was a little bit older, so we had to put in new fencing in order to improve the overall look. All in all it wasn’t very expensive and it makes the front of the house look more polished.
Any improvements or major renovations?
Aside from the fence, we didn’t have to make any major changes. I wanted a house that was pretty much move in ready.
What is your favorite thing about living there?
The moment that sticks in my head the most is my daughters first birthday party. We were able to have both sides of our family over and it was great to be able to have that many guests at once.
Do you still live in the same house or have you moved on?
I still live there. It turned out to be the perfect size for our family.
Do you have any advice for other first time home buyers?
The only advice I can think of for first time buyers is to stay in budget. I made a budget and stuck to it, and in the end it was the right choice. I stayed in budget and was able to save some money for my kids education, so it worked out well for me. I always recommend sticking to the plan when it comes to big investments like buying a home.
