A lover of cigar and a successful businessman, Michael W. Asimos also enjoys traveling, acquiring property and helping put children to school in areas around the world, which are in dire need of support. He believes that it is only right to give back to the community, as he has been very lucky to have a successful business and a beautiful family.
He believes that education is very important and it is one of the most valuable gifts that can be given to the next generation. Education opens your mind and your eyes to the world and broadens your horizons so you do not remain ignorant and clueless.
Aside from donating money to organizations, which support causes that are very near his heart, Michael also donates properties he bought so that they can be used for building schools. The lack of decent schools is horrible in many places, especially those in third world countries where people are so busy looking for food to put on their plates that they do not have time to think about their children’s education and future.
In what city did you purchase your first property?
After my cigar business took off, I managed to save enough money to purchase a house for my growing family. My wife was fed up with renting and we had a baby on the way so I thought it was about time I purchase my first house in Miami. It was in the year 2005 and it was costly but it was certainly worth it. I still have that property until now. It has a lot of memories and it is very valuable to me.
What was your living situation prior to buying your first house? Where/with whom/etc.?
My wife, who was pregnant at the time, and I was renting a flat in Miami. It was quite a small house and the rent was expensive. The house was also a long way from my wife’s workplace and she found it very tiring to have to travel. I had enough money saved so I thought it was the opportune time to buy a house. We thought about it and found more pros than cons so we took the plunge.
What motivated you to purchase your first house?
I had enough money and I consulted some people who owned properties. I also read numerous articles about buying your first home. Of course, I consulted my wife about it and we decided that it was best since our baby was coming. I wanted the both of them to be as comfortable as they can possibly be.
How did you go about getting the money together to buy it?
I have always been a thrifty person. I was raised to be very conscious about my spending and to always find opportunities to invest my money and make it grow. As I grew up I never forgot those lessons and as a matter of fact, I devoured any financial books out there. I did a lot of research before I invested my hard-earned money on my cigar business.
Because I was dedicated to the business and I was more than willing to learn, I was able to make my business grow and save enough money to finally be able to afford our very own house. However, I must say that I controlled myself and did not spend money on things, which were not really necessary. I had one goal in mind and I was focused on it. I wanted a house not only for me but also for my wife and our baby.
When you purchased, were you thinking of it as an investment or as a place to start a family? Please elaborate.
When I purchased the house, I did not really think if it as an investment. I thought of it as a place where I can go home to, a place where my family can relax and enjoy. Even when I was still a young teenager I had been thinking about having my own house and I worked hard towards the achievement of that goal. However, I quickly learned though that real estate property is also an investment and you should be very careful when you acquire one.
Fast forward many years later and after several houses bought and sold, I still own the very first house, which I acquired. It has a lot of sentimental value to me and I will hold it very near to my heart. It has now become a sort of vacation home for my family and me.
What are the 3 things you liked most about the house?
One of the things, which convinced me to buy the house, was the view. It looked like it came straight out of a postcard. When you wake up in the morning you can have breakfast al fresco while staring at the river. It was peaceful and calm and it was a great place to come home to after a busy and tiring day at work.
Was there anything you didn’t like about it?
There was nothing I didn’t like about the house. It was and it still is a very beautiful house.
Did you make any improvements or major renovations to the house?
Yes, I did spend a considerable amount of money renovating the house so that it would become what we had envisioned it to be and I was very happy with the results.
Please share 1-2 of your fondest/funniest memories from living there.
One of my fondest memories was coming home with my newborn son from the hospital after he was born. It was just the three of us; me, my wife and my newborn son and that moment will always remain special to me. Our family vacations are still the funniest. I am always busy with work and I cherish the time I get to spend with my family just enjoying ourselves, catching up and laughing. They are the best cure to stress.
Do you still live there or are you renting it?
Not really live there anymore but we still own it. We do spend some of our vacations in that house with the whole family and we are still enamored by the view even after so many years.
What advice would you give other first time home buyers?
Buying a home is something, which must not be taken lightly and there are plenty of things to consider. It is important to seek advice from experts so that you do not end up wasting your money.
