In what city/state was your first house located and approximately what year did you buy it?

I am a native of Coral Gables in Miami, Florida. I grew up and went to school here. Now that I have settled down to work here, it was only natural for me to buy my first house in the city. It’s a great city to live and work. I have fantastic support networks of friends and associates in the industry.

What was your living situation prior to buying your first house? Where/with whom/etc?

I have lived with my parents since college days. I was hesitant to go pro with my photography career. Similarly, I took a long time to move out and settle on my own. I am a somewhat conservative person. I have a low tolerance for risk. I have lived here in Miami all my life.

What motivated you to purchase your first house?

My career has developed in ways I had not imagined before going pro. This has brought with it new social networks in addition to my existing social circles. I needed a place that reflects the evolution taking place in my life. It’s a full-time job running a professional studio. This leaves little time for socializing. It is important to maximize the few opportunities we get.

How did you go about getting the money together to buy it?

I saved up and then got part financing from a lender. I have since cleared up the loan. The house is 100% mine.

When you purchased, were you thinking of it as an investment or as a place to start a family? Please elaborate.

My proficiency in business is improving. However, my decision to own a home is simply to use it as my go-to place of peace. Investment opportunities may come up later, but that is not part of the current plan. When family comes, I would like to hold onto it as a holiday home.

What are three things you liked most about the house?

I love the neighborhood. People observe a strict adherence to planning and zoning rules. This keeps order in the real estate market. I love the weather in Miami. It is as if it is always summer. The fun part is that the city has scenic views and numerous pedestrian pathways that are irresistibly inviting. Nothing clears my mind better than a windy walk with a camera snapping away landscapes.

Was there anything you didn’t like about it?

The house is just perfect. However, I have had to do minor upgrades and changed the interior look just a bit to reflect my conservative style and trends. I have also converted one of the rooms into a full-blown contemporary studio. This enables me to handle projects when I am at home without having to rush downtown to the studio.

Did you make any improvements or major renovations to the house?

I redid the interior colors and designated one of the rooms as a mini-studio. I like inspiring colors when I work. I also like to relax and rejuvenate ready for the next day full of fun.

Please share 1-2 of your fondest/funniest memories from living there.

Hosting my friends. There’s something about getting the love from people you have known all your life. It is authentic and uninhibited. One of my favorite activities is kicking back and having a good laugh. It stimulates my creative juices.

Do you still live there or did you sell it or rent it?

I still live in the house. It will be hard to sell it. I have built many memories here in a short time. I wish to neither sell nor rent.

What advice would you give other first time homebuyers?

Besides price, many factors go into the decision about your first home. It is where you will spend your immediate future. Choose a good location. Prioritize people over amenities and facilities. Be around people that inspire you to greater heights. In other words, choose your neighbors wisely. Once you have the location locked down, go for a space that makes you feel at peace.
